Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
  4. Mix the ingredients gently until a soft dough forms, being careful not to overwork it.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  6. Place the shaped loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Score the top of the loaf with a deep cross, cutting about ½ inch into the dough.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
