Chocolate Donuts made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients: buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fill each donut cavity about two-thirds full with batter.
  6. Bake the donuts in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, feel free to glaze or dust with powdered sugar as desired.
