Savory Broccoli Mac And Cheese for Home Cooks

Broccoli Mac And Cheese made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs optional

Method

  1. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until a paste forms.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until the cheese is fully melted and smooth.
  5. Add the cooked macaroni and broccoli to the cheese sauce, stirring until everything is well combined and coated.
  6. If using, transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly on top.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbling.
  8. Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. This resting time helps the sauce thicken further and makes serving easier.
