Simple and Heartwarming Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • Optional: 1 cup raisins or currants

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
  4. If using, fold in the raisins or currants until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently for a few seconds.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross in the center of the dough.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
